History
The Finnish Society for History of Technology’s founding meeting was held in December 1926, and the Society was registered on 6 October 1928 under the name ‘Suomen Teknillinen Museoyhdistys—Tekniska Museiföreningen i Finland r.y. r.f.’ Until the 1960s, the Society operated on the Helsinki University of Technology premises in Hietalahti, Helsinki.
The Finnish Association of Technical Museums handed over its own artefacts to the Helsinki Museum of Technology, which started its activities in the 1970s. The society directed its activities towards developing cooperation between technical museums and informing the public on issues related to the field. In the late 1970s, the association’s statutes were renewed to reflect its new objectives. The society’s statutes were again revised, and the society’s name was changed in 1995 to the Finnish Society for History of Technology.
The Society has about 160 annual members, two permanent members under the old statutes and about 13 supporter members. Since the Society’s founding meeting, the organisations involved have been the Academic Engineers and Architects in Finland TEK and the Tekniska Föreningen i Finland TFiF.
Since 1983, the Finnish Society for History of Technology has also published the Finnish Quarterly for History of Technology journal. The journal follows double-blind peer review procedures of the Federation of Finnish Learned Societies guidelines for articles.
